The original name of this area, 'Peran en Sykais,' is derived from Greek and means 'The Fig on the Other Side.' Pera, situated on the opposite side of the Golden Horn from old Istanbul, has historically been a haven for minorities and expatriates. Today, the Pera neighborhood still vividly represents Istanbul's rich mosaic of cultures. This route provides an opportunity to trace the footsteps and customs of various communities that once inhabited the famous 19th-century Istanbul district of Pera (known as Beyoğlu in Turkish).
As this walking route begins from Beyoğlu, participants will have the opportunity to discover the narrow streets, historic buildings, bustling shops, quaint schools, charming inns, and various other landmarks of Pera and Beyoğlu. These areas have transformed into Western districts since the 19th century, and participants of this urban route will learn about their unique stories and evolution. The route will focus on the historical residents and property owners of Istanbul, examining their perspectives on religion and modern Turkish Republic history. The journey will then lead participants towards Galata, a picturesque harbor district steeped in the city's layers and stories.
