Event Description

This workshop will be based on the human-centered “Good Public Space” methodology. This approach combines detailed analysis of the physical environment with direct insights from the community. Elements such as accessibility, safety, experience, sociability, activity, and nature will be brought together to holistically evaluate the multi-layered character of public space. Workshop Objective: To reveal the quality and meaning of public spaces in Istanbul from the users’ perspective and to explore the concept of “good public space” together. Method: A two-day applied city tour combining walking and workshop formats, where participants engage in on-site observation and interaction. Organized in collaboration with Marmara Municipalities Union, the workshop will take place in a selected public space in Istanbul and focus on two main themes: Spatial Analysis Citizen Participation Day 1: Observation and Analysis – Tracing Good Public Space in Istanbul Model Introduction: A brief introduction to the “Good Public Space” model based on the interaction between people and place. Design Evaluation: Assessing the physical design of the space according to specific criteria. Observation of User Behaviors: Observing how users interact with the space at different times of day. Understanding Different Perspectives: Examining how the space varies depending on the needs of different user profiles. Day 2: Citizen Experience – Understanding Public Space Through the User’s Lens Method Introduction: A brief explanation of the “Citizen Experience” method – a qualitative research approach to understanding people’s relationship with space. Understanding in Context: Participants directly engage with local residents to gather insights into their relationship with the public space.
