Event Description

In this talk and design workshop, different modes of listening to urban space are explored, particularly in contexts of conflict and violence. What can listening reveal about cities as they undergo violent transformations? How might attention to the sonic realm generate new insights for urban practice – for instance, by making perceptible what residents experience during moments of conflict and upheaval? And how can a more equitable sonic city be designed? The workshop opens with a talk based on the forthcoming book The Trembling City by Gascia Ouzounian, which investigates the sonic and vibrational aspects of urban violence in contexts of genocide, war, and urbicide. Participants are then introduced to approaches to designing sonic architectures, focusing on architectures that centre on sonic refuge and sonic justice, including Nathalie Harb’s Silent Room series. In the final part of the session, participants are invited to sketch installations, architectures, and spatial designs responding to the theme of sonic refuge. These sketches are discussed collectively, and selected projects are considered for publication in a forthcoming book. No prior knowledge is required. Participants should come ready to listen and sketch. Paper and pencils are provided, though participants may bring their own drawing or sketching materials.
