Cassidy Johnson

Cassidy Johnson is a Professor of Urbanism and Disaster Risk Reduction at The Bartlett Development Planning Unit, University College London.
Her PhD focused on the temporary housing after the 1999 Kocaeli and Düzce earthquakes, and more recently, she has been involved in research in Antakya following the 2023 earthquakes. Her research and teaching focus on how cities and communities can prepare for and recover from disasters such as floods, earthquakes, windstorms, tsunamis, and fires, with a particular emphasis on low- and middle-income countries and informal settlements. This has encompassed issues of urban planning, housing quality, building code regulations, informal settlements (and upgrading), and evictions.
She is interested in the roles of local governments, community-based organisations, and policy implementation on Disaster risk reduction and disaster recovery. I have conducted research in Türkiye, India, Thailand, Uganda, Tanzania, and Malawi.
