Demet Sürücü
Dr, Timber Building Construction and Research Center Deputy Manager, Bahçeşehir University
Demet Sürücü received her Bachelor's degree in Forest Industrial Engineering from Istanbul University in 2001 and completed her Master’s degree in the same department in 2005. Her academic and professional interests have been primarily focused on timber construction, with particular emphasis on traditional wooden architecture, structural restoration, and craftsmanship-based education.
In 2008, she was invited by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality to establish a specialized workshop dedicated to traditional timber construction techniques. From 2008 to 2020, she served as the Coordinator of the IMM KUDEB Timber Training Workshop, where she led numerous projects involving the conservation, maintenance, and restoration of historical timber buildings, particularly in Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula. Under her leadership, the workshop became a nationally recognized center for practical training in timber construction, offering hands-on education to thousands of trainees from various disciplines and professional backgrounds.
In 2021, she joined Bahçeşehir University’s Faculty of Architecture and Design as a Senior Specialist. In September 2024, he founded the BAU Timber Construction Application and Research Center, where she currently serves as Founding Director. Within the center, she continues to offer studio-based courses on timber construction to architecture students, provides expert consultancy to the timber industry, and oversees the design and construction of experimental wooden structures.
Her work integrates traditional knowledge with contemporary approaches in sustainable design and heritage conservation, contributing significantly to the revitalization and modernization of timber architecture in Türkiye.
