Husam Shakhshir

Husam Shakhshir has been serving as the Mayor of Nablus since March 2023.
Prior to this role, he served as the Deputy Mayor of Nablus from April 2022 to April 2024. He holds an M.A. in Modern History from The American University in Cairo (AUC), Egypt and a PhD in Modern History from Mutah University, Jordan. Alongside his administrative duties, Shakhshir has taught as a part-time lecturer at Birzeit University, specializing in International Law, particularly the Law of Armed Conflict, as well as international relations and International Humanitarian Law.
From 2017 to 2021, he served as Regional Advisor for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Middle East. Before this role, he was the Director of the ICRC Nablus Office from 1989 to 2017. His international experience includes serving as an International Delegate for the ICRC in Libya (2013) and Darfur, Sudan (2003). Actively engaged in civil society and governance, Shakhshir serves as a board member of the Little Hands Society – Nablus. He is also the former Deputy Director and board member of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, Nablus Branch, and a former board member of the Al-Ofoq Society for Development and Management.
Shakhshir’s career reflects extensive expertise in local governance, international humanitarian work, and conflict law, with a strong focus on promoting community development and humanitarian values.
