Joshua Maviti
Programme Management Officer, UN-Habitat
Joshua Maviti is a Programme Management Officer in the Land, Housing, and Shelter Section of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). In this role, he leads the section's initiatives on sustainable housing and the transformation of informal settlements.
With over 15 years of experience in urban and human development across Africa, the Caribbean, and Pacific nations, Joshua has spent the past eight years supporting governments in addressing challenges related to access to adequate housing, particularly in slum areas. He has played a key role in analyzing and shaping housing policy frameworks in African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries, integrating his expertise in data analytics, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment. Joshua has been instrumental in developing strategies and programs for upgrading informal settlements, resulting in improved living conditions through housing and infrastructure enhancement projects.
Currently, he is leading a collaborative initiative with UNEP that focuses on sustainable building materials in Bangladesh, Ghana, and Senegal. The project's objective is to decarbonize building materials by 2040 and contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Before joining UN-Habitat, Joshua held various positions within development agencies, where he played a pivotal role in establishing humanitarian mapping and information management systems in Sudan.
Joshua holds a bachelor’s degree from Kenyatta University and a master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. He is currently a doctoral candidate in environmental policy at the University of Nairobi, Faculty of Law.
