Madhusree Dutta
Curator & Filmmaker
Madhusree Dutta is a curator, author and filmmaker. She lives and works in Mumbai (India) and in Berlin (Germany).
She was the executive director of Majlis Culture Centre, an interdisciplinary platform for urban cultures in Mumbai, India between 1998 and 2016, and artistic director of Academy of the Arts of the World, Cologne, Germany, between 2018-2021. After spending almost a quarter of a century in institution building, Dutta currently works as a freelance artist.
Her chosen areas of interest are urbanology, public cultures, archiving processes and trans-locational hybridity. She had produced and curated a multi-layered, long-duration and interdisciplinary programme titled Project Cinema City in 2009-2014. The programme examined the role of cinema as an essential urban public culture with Bombay / Mumbai as a case study. The output of the project ranged from film and art productions, publications, exhibitions, pedagogical courses, and public campaigns for protection to single-screen movie theatres and informal community cinemas. Dutta is working on a feature film titled Flying Tigers on war, memory, and infrastructure in India, China, and Germany.
