Mehmet Doğu Karakaya

Mehmet Doğu Karakaya holds a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, a Master’s degree in Technical Demography, and a PhD in Demography, all from Hacettepe University. His doctoral research focuses on the implementation of probabilistic population projections and the measurement of demographic uncertainty to support evidence-based policymaking.
His areas of expertise focus on population dynamics, population projections, local and international development studies, migration, life tables, fertility, population change, data analysis, research methods, censuses, urbanization, housing, quality-of-life studies, youth, ageing, and capacity development.
Karakaya currently serves as an Expert at the Population and Migration Statistics Group, Department of Demographic Statistics, Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). Previously, he worked in the private sector in the field of development, then as an Assistant Expert at TurkStat’s TRC2 Diyarbakır Regional Office, before becoming an Expert with a methodological thesis on household surveys. He has also worked at Eurostat (Statistical Office of the European Commission) within the IPA Programme, and at the UN-Habitat Headquarters Data and Analytics Unit as an Associate Statistician. At different times, he has contributed to development-oriented initiatives such as the UN-Habitat Quality of Life Initiative and joint UNDP/UN-Habitat projects in both consultancy and volunteering-based roles. He is dedicated to bringing clarity to the unknown through data.
