Mehmet Doğu Karakaya
Dr., Expert, Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT)
Mehmet Doğu Karakaya completed his BSc in Statistics at the Faculty of Science, Hacettepe University in 2005. He pursued his MSc in Technical Demography at the Institute of Population Studies of the same university, where he defended his thesis “Provincial and Regional Population Projections for the Centenary of the Republic of Turkey” in 2009. He is currently finalizing his PhD in Demography at Hacettepe University, with his dissertation “Forecasting the Demographic Future of Türkiye by Probabilistic Projections” to be completed in June 2025. In addition, he authored his TurkStat expertise thesis in 2012, focusing on “Telephone Assisted Interview Methodology by Random Digit Dialing (RDD) in Household Surveys.”
Karakaya began his professional career as a Project Assistant (Statistician) at Agrin-Consult Co. Ltd. in Ankara (2005–2007). Between 2007 and 2013, he served as an Assistant Expert and later Expert at the Diyarbakır Regional Office of the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). From 2013 to 2022, he worked as a TurkStat Expert in the Population and Migration Statistics Group at the Headquarters in Ankara. During this period, he also participated in the Eurostat IPA Programme (2016) as a trainee in Luxembourg, specializing in population and migration statistics.
In 2022, Karakaya joined the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Headquarters in Nairobi as an Associate Statistician in the Data and Analytics Section of the Knowledge & Innovation Branch, where he worked until 2024. He then briefly served as a Statistician on Urban Migration for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Since April 2025, he has continued his role as a TurkStat Expert in the Demographic Statistics Department, Population and Migration Statistics Group, at TurkStat Headquarters in Ankara.
