Murat Güvenç
Prof., Chair, Ilhan Tekeli Foundation for Urbanism Culture
Murat Güvenç graduated from St. Joseph High School and the Department of City and Regional Planning at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Faculty of Architecture.
He worked as a faculty member at METU for 28 years. His work covers urban ecology, industrial geography, Istanbul and urban sociology, data analysis and visualization, and cartography. He is the co-author of Industry in Ankara, Emlak Bank 1926–1998: An Institutional History and Turkey Election Atlas 1950–2009.
He curated the exhibition Istanbul 1910–2010: The City, the Built Environment, and Architectural Culture. Between 2007 and 2010, he served as the Chair of the Board of Directors at the History Foundation. From 2014 to 2017, he was a member of the Board of Directors of TESEV (Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation). Between 2014 and 2024, he directed the Istanbul Studies Center at Kadir Has University.
Since 2024, Güvenç has been residing in Datça and/or Istanbul, and he currently serves as the Chair of the İlhan Tekeli Urbanism Culture Foundation. Together with Aysim Türkmen and Funda Dönmez Ferhanoğlu, he produces the weekly geography program Kentin Köpüğü (Foam of the City) on Apaçık Radyo.
