Design, Heritage & Conservation - Founder, Joseph Hardy Design & Heritage
Paulette McAllister is a designer and historic environment expert supporting the public and private sectors. Her longstanding role with local government in the UK involves acting as an external consultee for the management and assessment of statutory listed buildings, conservation areas and urban design projects. Her technical areas of expertise focus on the specialist area of Conservation led Regeneration and the long term conservation and reuse of Historic Buildings, ensuring through a clear understanding of place and heritage, that schemes and buildings are well designed and developed constructively.
Paulette has over 25 years’ experience and has run her specialist private practice Joseph Hardy design & heritage for over ten years, she has a strong track record in place-making and urban design, including concepts and strategies for new settlements and urban extensions. While the scale of scheme differs, increasingly key projects relate to shaping new communities and urban extensions within the South East of England. Presently her projects include urban design and conservation advice and engagement in the shaping of a new ‘garden village’ communities along with the formation of design strategies for site allocations within Local Plans and major urban extensions for housing growth within the Thames Gateway.
Commissions and clients within the private sector have included concept design for a WPP Group company early in her career which had a specific focus on high street regeneration and branded environments, which was followed by a position as Strategic Design Director for a land development agency.
Collaborations, Media and Publications - Current collaborative research is focussed on the development of Supplementary Planning Guidance in relation to young people and placemaking and heritage at risk from coastal erosion. At a local level she is co-authoring a Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan for a historic settlement within the Chelmsford Borough. Recent media work has included a guest appearance on BBC Radio Essex.
