Shereen Hussein

Prof., London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

Shereen Hussein is an internationally recognised thought leader in ageing, long-term care (LTC), and social policy.

Trained as a medical demographer, she has built a distinguished career at the intersection of population science and social policy, shaping evidence-informed approaches to the complex, evolving challenges of global ageing. She is Professor of Health and Social Care Policy at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and holds honorary professorships in Australia, Norway, and the United Kingdom, reflecting her international standing and academic influence. For over three decades, Hussein has been at the forefront of global efforts to develop equitable and sustainable care systems for older people. Her pioneering research has influenced health and care policy across the UK, Europe, Australia and the Middle East, bridging demographic analysis, social justice, and practical policymaking.

She is the founding director of the Centre for Care Research and Policy at LSHTM, a multidisciplinary centre advancing research on long-term care in the UK and internationally. The Centre fosters cross-sector collaboration and focuses on the intersections between care systems and wider societal structures, with an emphasis on equity, inclusion, and impact. A passionate mentor and advocate for the field, Hussein is deeply committed to developing the next generation of scholars and building a critical mass of research in the often overlooked and underfunded area of social care.
