Suk-Jun Kim

Prof., Electroacoustic Music and Sound Art, University of Aberdeen

Suk-Jun Kim is a South Korean composer, sound artist, and the author of 'Humming: the Study of Sound' (Bloomsbury) and 'Hasla' (Kehrer Verlag Heidelberg). 

Having won several international composition awards and attracted commissions, Kim’s music has been performed worldwide and can be heard on ICMC, IMEB, and SEAMUS labels, Vox Regis, and M&R. His research focuses on acousmatic reasoning, imaginal listening, phenomenological approaches to the aesthetics of electroacoustic music, immersive and 3D sound, space and place, place memory and sound, humming, porosity and listening selves, and futures of listening.  

Kim studied theology at Yonsei University, South Korea, earned a master’s degree in Music Technology at Northwestern University and a Ph.D. in composition at the University of Florida in the US. In 2009, Kim was invited to Berlin by DAAD for its one-year Artists-in-Berlin programme. He is a professor of electronic music and sound art at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, UK, where he has been teaching and researching since 2013. In 2023, he initiated a large-scale sound studies and sound art project Futures of Listening by collaborating with the National Asian Culture Center (ACC) in South Korea and has led its Sound Lab Team as senior researcher between May and December 2023. Between 2024-26, Kim is the Principal Investigator for Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities, an ISPF ODA challenge-oriented research project funded by the British Academy.
